Nasa are due an announcement tonight about the Martian atmosphere, signs of life in the form of microbes is my guess.

Re: Nasa announcement
There are traces of methane in the atmopshere, that much we know. Curiosity found it earlier this year.

Methane CAN be caused by life but it's possible for it to exist without life.

The NASA press conference is largely made up of the MAVEN mission people. MAVEN's main purpose is to discover more about how Mars is losing its atmosphere into space.

They released this yesterday
http://www.space.com/31037-mars-atmosphere-being-stripped-by-solar-wind-probe-data-animated.html

It could be a press conference to say that the solar winds are stripping away the atmosphere and give journalists an opportunity to ask more questions.

Equally it may be something else but MAVEN is not equipped to test for Methane but could possibly reveal something about the methane in the atmopshere.

ExoMARS from ESA and Russia, is designed to find where the gases in the atmosphere are coming from and will be launching in 2016.

Jakarta - Exactly! I always thought if a bunch of aliens turned up it MUST blow it all out the water. But I was being naive.

Making science fit religion you mean? Like they've been doing for hundreds of years !

Re: Nasa announcement
Mike - I used to think that it would blow religion out of the water too. Now I just think they'd make something up to explain it and carry on as before.

Re: Nasa announcement
This drip-feeding of "announcements is a new phenomenon - in the past I'm sure they simply announced something as soon as it was confirmed.

Perhaps they're onto something and are just preparing the groundwork for THE major announcement: finding actual contemporaneous life on another planet would probably make many people implode...and put many religious leaders out of work.

Re: Nasa announcement
Isn't it something about the atmosphere was 'blown away' by solar winds ?

They've actually observed water now? Fuck! I don't understand those who don't get in the remotest bit excited about this kind of thing.

Mate they've now observed water. The last announcement was based on the effects of water on staining the rocks.
